Your guess is right :)
I uninstalled ruta from eclipse, removed ruta jars in
$ECLIPSE_HOME/plugins and removed all entries referencing ruta in
$ECLIPSE_HOME/artifacts.xml. I then installed it again from eclipse and
now it is working.
