I'd like to first figure out why the lock code is faster independently
(by the Stevens test - I know he was getting like 50% better 
performance), but httpd became *slower* when actually used.

Things that make httpd slower don't make me very happy.  =-) 

I'm chatting with Aaron to see what's up with this and if I can
reproduce his results.  I'm scratching my head at this.  -- justin
