Subject [jira] Commented: (ZOOKEEPER-386) improve c and java cli shells

Patrick Hunt commented on ZOOKEEPER-386:
----------------------------------------

For C shell autotools should detect readline libs and enable this by default if present (should
also support turning off).

For Java I'm fine w/o.

I don't think the c shell has "help" command, we should add this (help usage).

Also, somewhat unrelated to this jira, but I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to support (user)
2 shells, cli.c and ZooKeeperMain.java. afaik those were originally intended as examples/testingtools
rather than user tools. We're also looking at adding command line support (perhaps through
python? see ZOOKEEPER-364 ), maybe it makes sense to have "user tool" shell in python instead...
Basically how many/which shells do we want?

thoughts?

> Possible improvements:
> Default host list to localhost:2181 when not given.
> Don't print a ton of debug, it looks like both cli_mt and zkCli.sh does this. Make a
simple ls that lists subnodes one line at a time and a simple cat that lists only the node
content, simple put etc.
> Shell with gnu readline capabilities and tab completion on node names would be a big
improvement of usability during testing and debugging.
