I subscribe to Mehdi's thoughts. For example, I noticed most active
Batik committers pretty silent on this thread, which doesn't mean
there isn't an opinion there as well. (I'm not sure if they are simply
not following this mailing list, so I'm trying to "fix" it by adding a
link to this thread in a tightly related issue [1] (i.e., dropping
Java 1.4 support), which will end up in batik-dev@.)

Is it possible to vote twice? ;-)

I'm also supporting the move to 1.5, as I see no benefit in simple
short-circuiting those users for almost no benefit. Java 1.5 would be
useful, though, for example for the compile-time type checking which
can then be start being introduced to increase security and stability.

+1 for the move to 1.5
