You do have to write it exactly as I did, below (capital DISPLAY and no
space between it and the ‘=’ character):

  DISPLAY= java -Djava.awt.headless=true -jar batik-1.7/batik-rasterizer.jar -d /tmp/a.png
samples/anne.svg
