If we're going to be writing fast-lossy code, we need have it built on a 173
API since that certainly seems like the right architectural direction.  (I'd
rather not start with SAX at this point; pull will be much cleaner than
push, and if it's pull, we should drive towards the most standard interface
we have in the java world)

Chris, as spec lead, do you have control over the licensing of the 173 RI,
and can we get its source opened for redistribution?  Could it be as simple
a matter (since you+BEA are the original author) of getting an Apache CLA
signed and faxed?
