But what do you mean about the rerieving bit and DOM3? I have an XML 
document I have parsed and need to get the XML declaration and DOCTYPE I am 
using org.w3c.dom can you tell me if it is possible and what classes methods 
are availible.

This is the XML declaration:
   http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml#sec-prolog-dtd

You can't retrieve it from a DOM as such (DOM3 allows retrieving
the values for the standardized pseudo-attributes).
