This is according to the XML specification which says all whitespace
characters should be changed to spaces in attributes. Attributes aren't
intended to contain formatted content. You can put special characters like
tab and linefeed into attribute by using character references.

Is there any way to get special characters such as tab, linefeed, etc. read
from attributes into a DOM? They seem to be stripped out by default.
