BTW -- this isn't just true of HotSpot. Any heavily adapting optimizing
compiler will eventually show weaknesses on heavily pre-optimized code.
Heck, any really good optimizing C compiler can be worked against with
pre-optimized code. Most good books on code performance will point these
sorts of things out.

It's a fact of life that the more you try to outwit the compiler, the more
it can't do for you.
