*sigh*. After I posted, I realized that following::*[. = $nodes]
makes it pick any node that follows the current node and for which
the string value of that node is the same as the string value of
one of the nodes in the $nodes set. Who cares about string values?
I wanted the intersection of following::* and $nodes, which is
something that requires keys or a wasteful xsl:for-each to do in
pure XSLT.

Anyway, you get the idea.
