I have a schema (http://abstractgamers.org/xml/iago-report.xsd) that
imposes a couple of unique and key/keyref constraints. I'm using
XML::Xerces (obviously) and have tried using both validator.pl and
validator-dom.pl included in the distribution (using --full_schema). I
am attempting to validate an instance document
(http://abstractgamers.org/xml/iago-report-test.xml) but it refuses to
flag the duplicate "iagoid" attribute in the <player> elements. The
Xerces documentation suggests that these constraints are supported, but
I just don't know what else to try to make that happen. I would greatly
appreciate any help you could offer.

Many thanks,
Aaron

Dear Apache Xerces Perl XML Parser developer,

within the scope of my diploma thesis at the University of Paderborn, Germany, with the title
"Study about communication and collaboration in software development in teams" I am conducting
a survey of members of software development teams.

I would be very grateful if you help me in my studies and answer the survey at http://thales.cs.upb.de/limesurvey185/index.php?lang=en&sid=91192&token=gpmxdrg9sats52a

This is the official description of the survey:

In the last years many means of communication and collaboration were introduced in software
projects to assist the development teams with their daily work.

With this study we want to identify requirements for a communication- and collaboration-supporting
platform for software development. For this purpose we will evaluate the utilization and effectiveness
of different means of communication and collaboration in solving software and managerial problems
in software development teams.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes and contains 55 questions that cover various topics.

Many thanks for your support of my research. If there are any further questions, don't hesitate
to contact me.

Best regards from Paderborn, Germany

> The Travel Assistance Committee is taking in applications for those
wanting
> to attend ApacheCon US 2009 (Oakland) which takes place between the 2nd
and
> 6th November 2009.
>
> The Travel Assistance Committee is looking for people who would like to
be
> able to attend ApacheCon US 2009 who may need some financial support in
> order to get there. There are limited places available, and all
applications
> will be scored on their individual merit. Applications are open to all
open

themselves,

>
> Financial assistance is available for flights, accommodation, subsistence

circumstances.
> It is intended that all our ApacheCon events are covered, so it may be

but
> there should be compelling reasons for you to attend an event further
away

>
> More information can be found on the main Apache website at
> http://www.apache.org/travel/index.html - where you will also find a link
to

>
> Applications for applying for travel assistance will open on 27th July

Hi Mark,

The p-dev list is for Xerces-Perl, you're likely to get more help there.

Just off the top of my head, it seems you are using Perl 5.10 and
there are still unresolved issues getting the Xerces code to compile
with Perl 5.10...

Cheers, jas.

>
> The Travel Assistance Committee is now accepting applications for those
> wanting to attend ApacheCon EU 2009 between the 23rd and 27th March 2009
> in Amsterdam.
>
> The Travel Assistance Committee is looking for people who would like to
> be able to attend ApacheCon EU 2009 who need some financial support in
> order to get there. There are very few places available and the criteria
> is high, that aside applications are open to all open source developers
> who feel that their attendance would benefit themselves, their
> project(s), the ASF or open source in general.
>
> Financial assistance is available for travel, accommodation and entrance
> fees either in full or in part, depending on circumstances. It is
> intended that all our ApacheCon events are covered, so it may be prudent
> for those in the United States or Asia to wait until an event closer to
> them comes up - you are all welcome to apply for ApacheCon EU of course,
> but there must be compelling reasons for you to attend an event further
> away that your home location for your application to be considered above
> those closer to the event location.
>
> More information can be found on the main Apache website at
> http://www.apache.org/travel/index.html - where you will also find a
> link to the online application form.
>
> Time is very tight for this event, so applications are open now and will
> end on the 4th February 2009 - to give enough time for travel
> arrangements to be made.
>
> Good luck to all those that apply.
>
>
> Regards,
> The Travel Assistance Committee

Hi all,

Since Xerces became a top-level project we've had a fairly bare bones a=
nd
frankly uninviting website which we were building with the old Styleboo=
k
tool. We had discussed building a Forrest based site, but nothing real=
ly
came of that ... until this weekend when I finally decided to invest so=
me
time in figuring out how to use Forrest. The result from that effort i=
s a
brand new site which I've checked in to SVN and uploaded to
http://xerces.apache.org.

Check it out.

Thanks.

> 2008-03-24, Trainings require a registration fee beyond the regular
> conference fee. Proposals may be submitted for half-day (3 hours),
> full-day (6 hours), or two-day (12 hours) training sessions, aimed
> at providing in-depth, hands-on development experience or related
> continuing education. Training submissions are welcome at beginner,
> intermediate, and expert levels.
>
> General Sessions
> General Sessions include presentations on practical development
> applications, insight into high-interest projects, best practices
> and key advances, overcoming implementation challenges, and industry
> innovations. Especially welcome are submissions that extend
> participants' understanding the role of ASF projects and their

delegates.
>
> Case Study/Industry Profile
> Practitioners are invited to submit presentations that focus on how
> implementing particular ASF technologies led to improved
> products/solutions, service offerings, changes in work practices,
> among other successes. Proposals that highlight overcoming
> interesting challenges in application design and developing
> innovative frameworks using multiple ASF projects are particularly

> Dear PMCs,
>
> Please could you forward the below message to your user@ and dev@ mailing
> lists, thanks in advance.
>
> -------------
>
> The Travel Assistance Committee is taking in applications for those
wanting
> to attend ApacheCon US 2008 between the 3rd and 7th November 2008 in New
> Orleans.
>
> The Travel Assistance Committee is looking for people who would like to
be
> able to attend ApacheCon US 2008 who need some financial support in order
to
> get there. There are VERY few places available and the criteria is high,
> that aside applications are open to all open source developers who feel
that
> their attendance would benefit themselves, their project(s), the ASF and
> open source in general.
>
> Financial assistance is available for flights, accomodation and entrance
> fees either in full or in part, depending on circumstances. It is
intended
> that all our ApacheCon events are covered, so it may be prudent for those
in
> Europe and or Asia to wait until an event closer to them comes up - you
are
> all welcome to apply for ApacheCon US of course, but there must be
> compelling reasons for you to attend an event further away that your home
> location for your application to be considered above those closer to the
> event location.
>
> More information can be found on the main Apache website at
> http://www.apache.org/travel/index.html - where you will also find a link
to
> the application form and details for submitting.
>
> Time is very tight for this event, so applications are open now and will
end
> on the 2nd October 2008 - to give enough time for travel arrangements to
be
> made.
>
> Good luck to all those that will apply.
>

>
> The Travel Assistance Committee

Hi,
I am trying to parse an XML Schema file using Xerces-p. The intention
is to read an XML schema file and build a model for creating an
application. There is no XML data file involved.

I looked at some examples provided in Xerces-c and it seems like XSModel
class is the way to go. There is one example called SCMprint in Xerces-c
which uses this class. However I am not able to used this class
Xerces-p. Is XSModel class supported in Xerces-p?

Is there any other way to parse XSD using Xerces-p?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks
Kamal

Is it correct to assume that the getLocalName method will return null
on a DOMElement object unless a Schema has been specified? For a very
simple XML test file, getNodeName returns what it should, however
getLocalName returns null. Testing with an XML file for which the
Schema is supplied, getLocalName works fine.

Otherwise, is there any other reason why this might be happening?

parsing SOAP server response

I'm attempting to parse a SOAP response with Xerces, and things are
looking fine but for the encodingStyle attribute of the 'Envelope'
element.

The beginning of a SOAP envelope is something like this:

---
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><SOAP-ENV:Envelope SOAP-
ENV:encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"
xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema

" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:SOAP-
ENC="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"><SOAP-ENV:Body>...
---

I grabbed the Schema file for the envelope here from http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/

(BTW, how can I tell Xerces to get '/' if there is no actual server
file name associated with a URL?), named it 'soap-envelope.xsd', and
setExternalSchemaLocation() to be 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/
  soap-envelope.xsd'.

Upon parsing the response, I get a validation error:

Attribute '{http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/}encodingStyle'
is not declared for element 'Envelope'.

If I add the 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/ soap-
encoding.xsd' string to the setExternalSchemaLocation call, it
complains upon parsing the encoding Schema file.

Removing the attribute from the XML allows parsing subsequently - I'm
sure there's something basic that I'm missing here - any pointers?

Thank you!

> Hi Jason, all,
>
> I am wondering what is the status of the swig subdirectory. I
> tried to do make test-suite but ended up with compile errors.
> Alberto also confirms that the code in it is not functional.
> According to SVN, there hasn't been any development in swig
> for the past 16 months.

I've been making this very low priority over the past year as it
seemed that the 3.0 release was not happening. I put a lot of effort
merging the Xerces-P codebase into the 3.0 tree, but then I really
lost momentum.

I do have time at the moment to ensure that the swig directory
compiles and produces a working perl module. This will probably take
me 2-3 days.

>
> Is anybody planning to get it into shape and continue development?
> If not, we should probably move it out of the Xerces-C++ code base.

Good question! Let me get everything into SVN and compiling again and
then I will have to let c-dev to decide the future of the scripting
language bindings to Xerces-C. I have written them and been
maintaining them but I find the my projects are taking me away from
XML parsing, so it would be good to find another helper that wants to
continue holding the SWIG bindings.

If not and no one wants the SWIG bindings anymore, then they should be removed.

I made an effort to contact the Ruby, Python, and Tcl communities to
let them know of the existence of the SWIG bindings, and that they
could benefit by having instant access to Xerces-C thru those
bindings, but I didn't get much of a response in the lists I
contacted. If one other language could be added, I believe it would
become much easier to support the bindings. As it is, there is only
Perl, so all the work falls onto the Perl maintainer's shoulders.

Cheers, jas.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure.

> There is no XML::Xerces-2.8 series. This is because the code has been

Heh, heh... No that safeguard was put there to ensure your happiness.
It is almost guaranteed not to compile because of API changes that
happen between versions.

There is no XML::Xerces-2.8 series. This is because the code has been
reorganized into the Xerces-3.0 line - so it is actually part of the
Xerces-C code now, a sub-project of Xerces-C and not it's own project.
But sadly, Xerces-3.0 has still not been released.

It will take a fairly large amount of work to put out a 2.8 release,
and my free time is currently used up. I would rather suggest you use
2.7 until 3.0 is released. If someone is desperately needing 2.8 they
can voice it on the list...

Cheers, jas.

Hi Gareth,

I'm sure. There's a document in the committers module in SVN (called
committee-info.txt) which has the reporting schedule for every project.
Ours is: February, May, August, November. That hasn't changed.

We were late last time. The "September" report is our August one [1]. Seems
they didn't get your first e-mail to them. You resent the report to them on
September 3rd.

Thanks.

> PMCs, could you please send this announcement to your various users@ and
> devs@ mailing lists, as appropriate for your particular community.
>
> And please, if you think it proper, add a link to MarkMail on your
> project web site as an option for searching your project's email
> archives. You can point to http://<project>.markmail.org.
>
> ----
>
> (A forwarded email from Jason Hunter)
>
> For the last few months I've been working on a new project: a web
> site for interacting with email archives. We're using, as the
> site's initial content set, the public Apache mailing list archives
> -- because Apache is the community I know best and I think people
> here will find the site useful. We've loaded a bit over 4,000,000
> emails across 500 lists.
>
> http://apache.markmail.org
>
> As you'll see with the chart on the home page, one of our goals with
> the site has been to focus heavily on analytics. We have lots of
> graphs and counts, and you're able to use them to watch Apache's
> historical growth and each individual project's growth. Every query
> you write gets its own histogram chart.
>
> Another goal has been interactivity. Every search result screen gives
> you lots of ways to refine your search (by sender, list, attachment
> type, etc). Plus we did a lot with keyboard shortcuts. You can hit
> "n" and "p" to move to the next and previous result and "j" and "k" to
> move up and down the thread view. There's a lot of little things like
> this. Plus if your result message includes Office or PDF files
> they're in-line interactive too.
>
> http://apache.markmail.org/search/ext:ppt+axis
>
> Another goal has been to focus on community. We could have launched
> MarkMail with 50,000,000 emails from many sources but I think it's
> better to start with focus. In fact, I'll be at ApacheCon and the
> Hackathon next week, along with my co-developer Ryan Grimm,
> looking for people's suggestions and maybe on the spot adding in a
> few of them. There's also potential to explore some fun one-off
> analytics, too.
>
> As part of the focus on communities, we setup MarkMail so it
> recognizes that Apache itself consists of many communities. If you go
> to http://apache.markmail.org you search all Apache emails, but if you
> go to http://struts.markmail.org then you're auto-limited to just
> Struts lists. Same for tomcat, spamassassin, httpd, and so on. You
> can always limit your search using "list:struts" in your query, but
> using the domain handles that a bit more elegantly.
>
> I've been working on this a long time, and I'm so happy to be able to
> share it with everyone. I hope you all find this useful!
>
> Notes on using the site:
>
> * Search using keywords as well as from:, subject:, extension:, and
> list: constraints
>
> * The GUI doesn't yet expose it, but you can negate any search item,
> like -subject:jira.
>
> * You can sort results by date by adding order:date-forward or
> order:date-backward to your query
>
> * Remember to use "n" and "p" keyboard shortcuts to navigate the search
> results
>
> * You're going to want JavaScript enabled
>
> If you'd like to send me private feedback I'm jhunter at apache dot org.

Hai All,

The subject line itself is looking strange??

I am using validator.pl with --full_schema option provided with the Xerces 2.7 version samples.
I can able to parse xml file against a XSD without any problem.

My client wants a namespace to be added to the processing instructions. I doubt that this
is not allowed as per XML specifications. But my client wants, I need to provide this.

<?g:CLG.MDFC ID="C000001M001000" IDREF="O000001M001000"?>

The parser is showing an error "Colons are not allowed in this name when namespaces are enabled".
When I put 0 against the namespace the parser is not showing even valid errors.

I also tried adding $parser->setFeature("$XML::Xercesc::XMLUni_fgSAX2CoreNameSpacePrefixes",
0); this feature. But in vain.

Can anybody tell me how can I achieve the above task.

get the BBC to fund that, but it didn't happen. It would also be
possible to have someone else write up the guide, and I can suggest

I've decided that since I'm looping through the elements in the file
that I'm parsing, that I might as well construct a duplicate document
with only the child elements that I want (those whose data is
incorrect).

I'm having some problems in creating this document, and wanted to
just run by the process that I'm going through for some possible
corrections. Effectively I'm going off of the sample code,
specifically DOMCreate.pl.

1. The file which I'm parsing does not directly mention any DOCTYPE
(as defined in the call to createDocumentType()). Can I also omit
it's inclusion from the document which I'm creating?

2. after I've created the document with a fake doctype, I proceed to
clone a node which I'm interested (I'm assuming I need to clone the
node, as opposed to simply adding it to the new document), and then
append it to the document. I get the following error: "A attempt was
made to insert a node where it is not permitted". Do I need to cast
the DOMNode as an element somehow, or?

any help would be appreciated - if there's a user guide to Xerces,
that would be even more appreciated!

Hello,

Upon parsing an XML file with the Xerces DOM parser, there may be
times when I want to recreate and eventually print the XML of a
particular DOMNode, as well as it's parent entities. Other than
piecing together the XML string as I traverse the structure, is there
any Xerces function which would allow me to print out only the
DOMElements/Nodes leading to a particular node from the root of the
document?

As an example, assuming this is my XML:

<fruit>
   <description>
     <name>banana</name>>
     <color>yellow</color>
   </description>
   <description>
     <name>strawberry</name>
     <color>red</color>
   </description>
</fruit>

If for instance, I wanted to print out all of the XML related to the
banana, and end up with a result like:

<fruit>
   <description>
     <name>banana</name>>
     <color>yellow</color>
   </description>
</fruit>

Are there any existing functions which can do this, or do I need to
piece it together on my own?

thanks!

Hey Lev,

I'm forwarding your query to the Xerces-C guys - maybe there is
something different with how Xerces is implementing the DOM3 API?

Cheers, jas.

Subject: getting element text?
To: p-dev@xerces.apache.org

I'm addmitedly new to DOM, but I'm a bit confused by what should seem
to work based on the W3 DOM tutorial.

if I have a Xerces::DOMElement, and I want to get the value of that
element, one would assume that getNodeValue would get me the text
string within the element tags:

<Element>Some Text</Element>

So if I have a DOMNode where getNodeType() returns 1, and getNodeName
returns 'Element', shouldn't getNodeValue return 'Some Text'? I'm
consistently getting emtpy strings for any Element that I use the
getNodeValue method on. getTextContent gives me the text, however I
would think that that's the wrong way to go about things.

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks,
-lev

Yes, look at the parser settings. There is a setting which is off by
default to throw away ignorable whitespace. But you must have
validation turned on to make this work = which means that you need a
DTD.

> this doesn't seem to parse (understandably, I suppose).

Sorry, looks like fine XML to me, it should parse...

Cheers, jas.
