It seems that you misunderstood the meaning of xs:token.
It's true that the lexical space and the value space of xs:token don't allow 
tab and new line characters, but those characters were already filtered out by 
the whiteSpace facet. That is, by the time we check the validity of the input 
string, it's already normalized as per the whiteSpace facet, and all those 
characters have been replaced by spaces, and then collapsed.
