At BarCampApache [1] we will be holding a Meetup up. This will happen
on the afternoon of Monday 2nd Nov. The purpose of the meetup is to
discuss what a proposed community development/community outreach group
within the ASF might do. Primarily this will build on the work done in
the name of GSoC and GHOP, it will also consider a proposal for an
ongoing ASF mentorship program.

The reason for posting here is that the session is not limited to
these types of community development, anything that has volunteers to
drive it forwards would be welcome to the table.

The women@a.o list has not really gone anywhere, but maybe this is
another chance to look at the lack of female representation here at
the ASF. If anyone wants to join us to explore ideas please come
along.

I am defending my dissertation proposal tomorrow (Wednesday) This is the
first of the two defenses done to finish a Ph.D program in Information

I am inviting you to join me online or face-to-face (if you are in
Syracuse). The topic of the proposal is: "Leadership Behaviors and
Perception in Self-Managing Virtual Teams (Open Source Software Development
Teams)".
If you would like to join us online, below are instructions-- it requires a
free software download that can be done ahead of time. The format of the
defense is as such:
- The meeting begins with the committee discussing among themselves for
about 15-20 minutes (So the actual online presentation may begin 15-20 mins
after the time mentioned below.
- I will present my research for about 15 minutes. The presentation will not
include results, but mainly the proposed study, the importance, and the
methods.
- The committee will ask questions.
- The viewers (including you, if you join online or face to face) ask
questions. My colleague Ben Addom will manage the online session, and
coordinate question asking for the people who are online.
- The defense will end at 5pm EST
- Those of us who are here will celebrate the defense (food --I don't know
exactly what--, and drinks (including alcohol) will be served.
- Some of us will go to Pastabilities at 6.15pm EST for more
appetizers/dinner/drinks. (Let me know if you want to join us so that I can

Like a fine wine, SCALE continues to improve with age. The 7th Annual
So Cal Linux Expo will be February 20-22, 2009.

For 2009, the Expo will return to the Westin LAX Hotel, site of the
6th Expo. Because interest in Open Source Software is steadily
growing, attendance at SCALE continues to also grow. The depth and
breadth of its audience is expanding, so the Expo will add additional
speaker tracks to expand the educational opportunities for guests of
all experience levels. The Call for Papers for the 7th Annual Expo
opened August 4th 2008. The CFP solicits proposals from those who
wish to speak at SCALE in February.

In addition to three general tracks, a Developer's track and a
Beginner's track have been added. So there are many more
opportunities to speak at SCALE, and on a vastly wider breadth of
topics than in the past. Pertinent dates for the CFP are: 4 August,
2008: CFP Opens 30 Nov, 2008: Deadline for abstracts/proposals
submissions 20 Dec, 2008: Last date for notiï¬cation of acceptance
20 Feb, 2009: Conference starts

If you're interested in presenting at SCALE, the full CFP can be
found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale7x/s7x_cfp.

Please consider speaking - SCALE welcomes your proposal!

<title>SCALE 6x Gears up</title>

The Sixth Annual SoCal Linux Expo will be February 8th-10th, 2008. It
will again be at the Westin LAX. SCALE has reserved more of the hotel
resources for SCALE 6X which will help address some of the seminar
crowding issues that arose during S5X (success is a nice problem to have).

Over the last two SCALEs, the Expo has expanded to included specialized
conferences on the Friday prior to SCALE. The Expo will “expand upon the
expansion†for SCALE 6x: the Women in Open Source conference will return
for its second year; the health care conference, now knows as DOHCS –
Demonstrating Open Source Health Care Systems, returns for a second
time. Last year DOHCS was a single track. For SCALE 6X, DOHCS splits
into two tracks, a technical track and a business track.

And newly added for SCALE 6X is a Friday conference on education: “Open
Source in Education†which focuses on opportunities for Open Source in
the field of education .

If you have any experience in any of the above-mentioned areas, please
consider sharing it with the Open Source community at SCALE: the calls
for papers for SCALE and for the Friday conferences can be found here:
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/conference-info/calls-for-papers/
&lt;http://www.socallinuxexpo.com/scale6x/conference-info/calls-for-papers/&gt;
All of the calls are now open for submittals. For SCALE 4X and 5X the
speaker slots filled rapidly; we anticipate the same for SCALE 6X. So if
you're considering speaking, don't delay submitting your proposal.
Submittal info for each conference can be found on their respective CFP
pages.

If your organization is considering a booth on the SCALE Expo floor, be
advised that we no more booths than last year, and last year they went
quickly. If you want to ensure that you have a booth reserved, apply for
one NOW. If you're a non-profit group, complete the application form at
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/documents/scale6x_dotORG_application.pdf
and send it to gareth@socallinuxexpo.org

The second SCALE IRC chat will be September 16th , at 7:00 pm PST. It
will be held in the #scale-chat channel of OFTC (irc.oftc.net). If you
have questions or comments about SCALE, feel free to join us.

SCALE 6X looks to be even better than S5X; mark your calendar – be in
Los Angeles February 8th-10th , 2008!

Subject: [Scale-announce] So Cal Linux Expo Announces Call For Papers

July 26th, 2007

The Linux Expo of Southern California has opened the Call For Papers
for the 6th Annual Southern California Linux Expo, to be held
February 8th, 9th, &amp; 10th, 2008. As with SCALE 5x, S6x will be held
at the Westin Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport.

If you’re interested in speaking at SCALE, don’t wait to submit your
proposal. Over their last couple of events, the Linux Expo has had
many more applications than they have had speaker slots available.
See http://socallinuxexpo.com/scale6x/documents/scale6x-cfp.pdf for
details on how to apply for a speaking opportunity at SCALE.

Likewise, if you know someone who has something interesting to say
about Open Source software, pass along the CFP to them and encourage
them to apply.

Hi Apache women!

We are a group of social researchers very keen on new technologies applied
to the Information and Comunication (ICT) fields. For a long time, we have
been asking ourselves what is going on with women and ICT, why there are not
loads of women involved in ICT and what those already involved are actually
doing.
That's why we need your help and input. We would like to know what enabled
you to have acces to the ICT, what are you currently doing and what do you
expect to develop in the future. From your answers we might find some clues
to open up this world to many other women. Do you fancy contributing to the
challenge ?

We propose you some questions, answering them will not take you more than 20
minutes. In this survey you will find some closed questions where you should
mark the answers with an "X" and some open ones where you should write down
your answer.

You have the chance to answer in english, french, spanish or catalan:
http://donestech.net/?q=node/103

You can read in english our manifesto: http://donestech.net/?q=node/256

Results will be distributed copyleft.

Thanks.

&gt; I disagree. I think that having topic-specific lists is good.
&gt; *Add* a 'newbies@' list if you like, but I think 'women@'

Indeed. I think women@ is a great idea, and is a good focus. For
underserved groups, I'm happy if volunteers step up to work on a
project that explicitly tries to benefit that group, to get more
participants in that arena. Duh, everyone's welcome to participate,
but the focus is on women in open source - good focus.

To any complainers, I'm also happy to support a men@ or a martians@
group just the same. But it takes people to volunteer to do the work.
If you want to volunteer to help GroupX out, great!

This being my first time updating the front page, I added a short note
and didn't kick anyone else's news off.

Humorous side note ... in the q&amp;a panel Dru Lavigne mentioned that when
the BSD developers were looking for fodder for the fortunes file, she
emailed them a long list of tips, which they included one by one. Dru
mentioned how her daughter thought it was really cool to see her mom's
name when she logged in and got a fortune.

well, when I logged into people.apache.org just now to publish the
change to the front page, I got this:

   FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE-p10 (SMP) #1: Thu Oct 26 23:58:02 PDT 2006
To see how long it takes a command to run, type the word "time"
   before the command name.

It's fun to suddenly have that additional context now for who Dru is.

Hi Jean!

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed the humor in your presentation-- especially the slide on how
many words men and women use. I find that quite often, that's the same
way in the business world too, and it's powerful to be able to share
an idea in a short, to-the-point way and it's not a good idea to go on
and on and on and on and on and form multiple sentences to repeat the
same idea over and over and over and over (ok--this part was a joke
:))

Since the presentation included a page on how to ask questions, I
would like to share a list from Eric Raymond on how to ask smart

Just a quick note regarding the Women in Open Source Mini-Conf on Feb 9
... It was quite a full day with 7 sessions and a q&amp;a panel at the end.
I thought it went really well, with lots of dynamic discussion during
the sessions.

Slides for two of the sessions (including mine) can be downloaded from
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/wios07

And I'm hoping more will become available.

regards,

Ken recently wrote [1]:
&gt; Women and men are different -- _vive la diffrence!_
&gt; - -- and that's at a much more basic and immutable level.
&gt; Physiologically, hormonally, emotionally, intellectually -- they're
&gt; just different. Having a list that recognises this and uses the
&gt; information about the differences to address cultural barriers
&gt; is, I think, a good thing. If someone wanted to start a 'men@'
&gt; list, I'd applaud it for exactly the same reasons. But trying
&gt; to morph a women-specific venue into a genderless one, because
&gt; 'we all have the same problems' (*not* a quotation), is not
&gt; something I consider a step forward.

I've never been a believer in unisex myself (nor in "one size fits all").

I just read "The Female Brain" by Louann Brizendine, a neuropsychiatrist
at UC San Francisco (http://www.louannbrizendine.com). With the vast
number of books about the topic available today, what got me to read
this one was how much the PC patrol blasted it -- I figured anything
that upset them that much must be worth reading! And it definitely is --
it's well written, entertaining, moves swiftly, and rings of much truth.
 I recommend it highly.

She does use extremes in her examples, which is part of what makes it so
entertaining, and I think readers just need to realize that actual
mileage varies from one individual to another.

Here's one example that highlights a difference between men and women
that is highly variable IMHO. She cites that men "use" about 7,000
words per day and women 20,000 (page 14). [I heard similar numbers cited
in a witty talk at the Society of Women Engineer's (SWE) conference last
year. The speaker ended the point she was making with, "So, women, when
your husband gets home from work, he has exactly 3 words left: What's
for dinner?"]

I know many women (and even some men) who probably do speak/write 20,000
words a day -- or more -- but I'm definitely not one of them.

Other comparisons Brizendine makes definitely ring true for me and one
of them jelled something in my mind that I've been thinking about for a
while. I mentioned to a few people at ApacheCon US '05 that the
"aggressive" environment at Apache can be offputting for women, and my
observation was mostly met with quite puzzled looks.

Brizendale writes (p. 21) "If you're a girl, you've been programmed to
make sure you keep social harmony." She begins her section titled "Fear
of Conflict" (page 40) with "Studies indicate that girls are motivated
-- on a molecular and neurological level -- to ease and even prevent
social conflict." Two paragraphs later she writes,

"Men often enjoy interpersonal conflict and competition; they even
get a positive boost from it. In women, conflict is more likely to set
in motion a cascade of negative chemical reactions, creating feelings of
stress, upset, and fear."

This isn't to say that *all* women feel this way or that the women who
do feel stress in varying degrees can't or won't dive into conflict.
I've been in software engineering for over 20 years and have had to duke
it out with the best of them many times. About 15 years ago I worked in
a scientific r&amp;d operation that honored me (dubiously, I thought) with
the nickname "Mighty Mouse" (I'm short, very short). But I think the
main point is I have never "enjoyed" conflict and I have definitely
never gotten a "positive boost" from it. I have done what I felt was
necessary at the time for whatever reason -- and been exhausted as a result.

At any rate, what Brizendale wrote has helped me set a better context
for what I've observed at the ASF. The view I had of Apache much of the
first year I started participating was it was an unhealthy, contentious
place. Over time, I came to understand that conflict at the ASF actually
can be healthy and can have positive results.

So, what do I think could be done about this specific differing
viewpoint ("conflict is healthy" vs. "conflict is unhealthy") between
men and women at the ASF?

First of all, I don't think the answer is "change the ASF". I don't
expect the dynamics I view as aggressive to change -- and I don't
necessarily think they should. The SWE speaker also said, realistically,
"Women, you're working in an engineering world dominated by men; you
have to learn to operate within their rules." and I agree with her on
that. The majority does rule.

What we *can* do is help people understand this environment better, help
them understand that the conflict they see is healthy (most of the time)
and (most often) leads to creative collaboration. We can encourage
people to speak up about the situations that make them uncomfortable and
perhaps provide insight for understanding that situation. We can
encourage women to join (and, more importantly, to stay in) the debates
they view as important -- and, hopefully, with less stress.
