Steve Rowe commented on LEGAL-302:
----------------------------------

FYI the Egothor code in Lucene's stempel module is licensed under version 1.00 of the Egothor
license (not the 2.00 version linked in the description), which is available here: [http://egothor.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/egothor/egothor/LICENSE?revision=1.2&view=markup].
 I compared this to the license in headers in Lucene source code files, and the only difference
is that the copyright year ranges end in 2004 in the source code files, but in 2006 in the
version on SourceForge CVS.

The Egothor 1.00 license appears to be a modified 3-clause BSD license, with two added clauses:

{noformat}
    4. Products derived from this software may not be called "Egothor",
       nor may "Egothor" appear in their name, without prior written
       permission from Leo.G@seznam.cz.

   In addition, we request that you include in the end-user documentation
   provided with the redistribution and/or in the software itself an
   acknowledgement equivalent to the following:
   "This product includes software developed by the Egothor Project.
    http://egothor.sf.net/"
{noformat}

I don't think the clause labeled "4." is an issue, so that leaves the final clause (I'll call
it the acknowledgement clause), as mentioned in the description.

My interpretation of the acknowledgement clause is that Lucene has already met it, since by
including the full license in each source code file, the acknowlegement is included "in the
software itself", and that this is sufficient.

Lucene's NOTICE file also includes this statement:

{noformat}
The Stempel analyzer (stempel) includes BSD-licensed software developed
by the Egothor project http://egothor.sf.net/, created by Leo Galambos, Martin Kvapil,
and Edmond Nolan.
{noformat}

So I think this issue can be closed as not a problem.

> Some parts of Apache Lucene, namely the files in
> /lucene/analysis/stempel/src/java/org/egothor/stemmer/
> are under a strange license, indicated in the files and available on
> https://www.egothor.org/license/2.00.txt
> It clearly states that
> > In addition, we request that you include in the end-user documentation
> > provided with the redistribution and/or in the software itself an
> > acknowledgement equivalent to the following:
> > "This product includes software developed by the Egothor Project.
> >   http://www.egothor.org/"
> A quick interpretation of the code of this license is that it taint all the code of Lucene
and that the Lucene doc should have this mention. Also, I think this should be indicated in
the LICENSE.txt of Lucene.
> Thank you,
