Marvin Humphrey commented on LEGAL-284:

Thanks for your inquiry, but as Jeff Hui already suspected in his original posting, this is
not a legal issue. I invite you to subscribe to the mailing list dev@community.apache.org
(by sending an email to dev-subscribe@community.apache.org) and to ask your question there.
I see from https://github.com/Quick/Quick/issues/660 that you are dedicated to making the
tech industry more welcoming to a wide variety of people. This is also something that many
people at the ASF care deeply about, and dev@community is the forum where we typically discuss
topics like diversity and outreach.

Please note that you are welcome to take the text of the Apache License 2.0 and rename it
to the "Quick License 2.0", which you could then switch the Quick project over to use (since
the terms would be identical). Relicensing to any license with different terms (such as the
MIT license) would require that you contact all the contributors for Quick and obtain explicit
permission from the copyright holders to release their work under a new license.

> Cultural Appropriation of 'Apache'
> ----------------------------------
> Key: LEGAL-284
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-284
> Project: Legal Discuss
> Issue Type: Question
> Reporter: Jeff Hui
> (This might be the wrong place to contact, but I wasn't sure what else was best to ask.)
> I use the Apache License 2.0 for many of my projects but I have been asked if the Apache
Foundation is [cultural appropriating|https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation]
the term Apache from the Native American tribe.
> So I ask, does the Apache Foundation use "Apache" with permission from the appropriate
Native American Tribe(s)?
> I'm not particularly familiar with any of the nuances of this, but any details about
this would be appreciated.
