Perhaps step 1 is a nice write up of the paths a project currently on the json jar should be considering.

After a brief intro of the issue, it could list things like 1) migrate code to Jackson, 2) use com.tdunning (kudos for making that Ted), 3) remove functionality, 4), 5) etc?

Yes.

December 31st sounds like a good date to me. I would also encourage projects that can do a clean release (if they release before then) to do so.

I am willing to put in personal time to help make that possible.
