I guess the challenge is that some licenses like BSD and MIT
explicitly includes a (c) line and text like "The above copyright
notice" - so it could look a bit odd if you only include a partial MIT
license text.

An alternative (which Apache RAT etc wouldn't recognize) would be just
a referral, e.g:

/*
 * This file is (adapted) from the Foo project
 * <http://foo.example.com/>
 * and is distributed under the MIT license.
 * See foo/LICENSE-MIT.txt for details.
 */

But of course inside that LICENSE-MIT.txt file you would have the same
(c) issue but could more clearly refer to the provenance of the
source.
