Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-258) How do we deal with non-ASF licenses in the header of a file?

Justin Mclean commented on LEGAL-258:
-------------------------------------

MIT is a category A compatible license [1]. You leave the header as is and add the MIT license
(preferably a pointer to the license text) to the LICENSE file. [2]

The only thing I'd be concerned about is "Portions of this software are copyright by UChicago
Argonne, LLC." - do you know how that original code was licensed? (It's very likely to be
permissive and needs to be treated in the same way).

> I need to bring some c++ header files into the Mahout codebase. Currently they have
an MIT X11 license at the top eg.:
> {code}
> +
> +/* =========================================================================
> +   Copyright (c) 2010-2016, Institute for Microelectronics,
> + Institute for Analysis and Scientific Computing,
> +                            TU Wien.
> + Portions of this software are copyright by UChicago Argonne, LLC.
> +
> +                            -----------------
> + ViennaCL - The Vienna Computing Library
> +                            -----------------
> +
> +   Project Head:    Karl Rupp                   rupp@iue.tuwien.ac.at
> +
> + (A list of authors and contributors can be found in the manual)
> +
> + License: MIT (X11), see file LICENSE in the base directory
> +============================================================================= */
> +
> +/** @file viennacl/compressed_matrix.hpp
> +  {...}
> {code}
> I am wondering if I should copy the ASF License above that or if that license needs to
be removed fully? There are ~50 c++ header files that i will be bringing in.
> Should I just leave this as is? It is my understanding that we should not modify the
file or the license.
> Thank You
