Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-234) Clarify NOTICE additions from other ASF projects

Christopher Tubbs commented on LEGAL-234:
-----------------------------------------

Further complexity: some code changes have been contributed to both Accumulo and commons-VFS,
but I don't think it has been released in VFS (yet). If we need individual NOTICES for each
ASF project whose code we've bundled into our own (identical or slightly modified), do we
need to also include NOTICE lines for these VFS classes which we're including in Accumulo?
Or does VFS need to include NOTICE lines for what they're including which was first released
in Accumulo?

> In Accumulo, we currently have some contents of the NOTICE file with lines like:
> Apache Accumulo
> Copyright 2011-2016 The Apache Software Foundation
> This product includes the Apache Thrift libthrift JAR file.
> Copyright 2006-2010 The Apache Software Foundation
> I couldn't find clear documentation for these, which essentially amount to duplicate
notices that the software includes ASF-copyrighted code. These aren't "third-party", after
all. In addition, the dates are different, so if these notices should be aggregated in some
way, what dates should be given? The earliest and latest dates?
