Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-220) Python script that imports LGPL
Date Fri, 24 Jul 2015 17:53:04 GMT

Lawrence Rosen commented on LEGAL-220:
--------------------------------------

Why would Apache require this cumbersome procedure if ASF can simply distribute this FOSS
program (PyMySQL library) as the LGPL license already allows us to do?

Is there a practical reason why we would make our customers get their own copy of a FOSS program
merely because we have some "infectious" objection to LGPL source code?

> To whom it may concern,
> I'm developing a standalone utility that's a single Python file that connects to the
MySQL database used by Apache Ambari.
> My python script imports PyMySQL module at run-time, which is licensed under LGPL.
> This means that a customer running this utility would have to install the PyMySQL library
themselves, and then run my script.
> Can my script be shipped with Apache Ambari under ASF v2 license?

> I've read [http://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html] "WHICH LICENSES MAY NOT BE INCLUDED
WITHIN APACHE PRODUCTS?", but it isn't clear since I'm not actually including the LGPL library
in my source code, but importing it at run-time.
> Further, PyMySQL module was meant to replace MySQLdb because the latter was GPL.
> Please advise, thank you.
