Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-214) Obsolete Third-Party Licensing Policy page still being quoted / used
Date Wed, 07 Jan 2015 16:27:34 GMT

Marvin Humphrey commented on LEGAL-214:

I agree that the old content needs to be hidden more aggressively. I've also experienced problems
where people continue to reference that page even though it is marked as obsolete.

If other people feel that outright deletion is the best plan, that's fine -- but I prefer
the alternative of leaving a skeleton page in place.

# Remove all meaningful content.
# Add a "noindex" meta tag.
# Add text explaining why the page was removed and linking to superseding content.
# Link to some crippled, archival version of the old content. The ideal would be a link to
ViewVC or an equivalent version control browser, but unfortunately I don't believe that the
website repo is public. As a fallback, I suggest dumping the last version of the content
into a permanent paste on [http://paste.apache.org].

Whatever we do with 3party.html, I would like to see the same treatment applied to [http://www.apache.org/legal/ramblings.html]
(and potentially other obsolete pages around Apache).

> Obsolete Third-Party Licensing Policy page still being quoted / used
> --------------------------------------------------------------------
> Key: LEGAL-214
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-214
> Project: Legal Discuss
> Issue Type: Task
> Reporter: Sebb
> The Third-Party Licensing Policy [1] has been replaced by ASF Legal Previously Asked
Questions [2].
> However I've twice seen posts recently which rely on it.
> I added some more text to hopefully make it clearer that the page is obsolete.
> Perhaps it is time to consider removing the page?
> Or maybe move the page and leave only a page that has the header info directing users
to the new page.
> I think people tend to ignore the header currently, so if there were only the header
this would be impossible.
