Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-206) "greenmail" library purported to be ASL may actually be LGPL; is a dependency in several ASF projects

Hoss Man commented on LEGAL-206:

I echo all of steve's comments.

if folks with lots of experience following/understanding ASF policy related to 3rd party licensing
feel that this is a cut/dry non-problem, then please understand that all of the comments from
non-legal experts like steve & myself should be taken as a pretty clear indication that
the published policies are not clear on situations like this and treat this Jira ticket as
an indication/tracking reminder that the policies should be made more clear.

bq. If you want to view what the web site says in the worst possible light that is your prerogative.

it's not an issue of perogative -- it's an issue that as ASF committers & PMC members
(and respectively: former PMC chair & ASF Member) steve and I are pretty much the exact
target audience of the documentation of 3rd party licenses -- and to us, as written, they
do not make it clear that LGPL is "ok" in this context.

The clarity of the documentation shouldn't be judged by the people who have been discussing
& working on it for 8 years, it should be judged by how well the people who really need
to depend on it can make sense of it.

> Issue Type: Question
> Reporter: Hoss Man
> Be advised that at least 5 Apache projects appear to depend on a third party library
known as "greenmail" which advertises itself in may places as being licensed under the ASL
2.0, however most of the greemail source files contain headers claiming LGPL.
> This issue requests that the Legal VP advise the affected projects on what they need
to do (if anything) moving forward to be in compliance with ASF policy.
