Subject [jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-185) Classify 3-clause BSD ("simplified BSD")

Richard Fontana commented on LEGAL-185:
---------------------------------------

Just a comment that this may be the result of a change to the OSI website that took place
sometime around 2011, in which the page for 'BSD license' got split into two pages with much
of what was on the original page moved to
http://opensource.org/licenses/BSD-3-Clause
Before that time it was immediately clear that the 3-clause BSD license was OSI-approved from
examination of http://opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php but (to one or more people)
slightly less clear that the 2-clause BSD license was OSI-approved.

By strange coincidence today I noted in the legal-discuss mailing list for OpenStack that
BSD-3 was an ASF Category A license. I think that is likely a correct assertion based on historical
analysis, but worth clearing up given the reference to the opensource.org URL.

> This question was never really answered on the list, so I'm resubmitting it via JIRA
to fit the apparent workflow a little better.
> The category-a list [1] currently includes:
> "BSD (without advertising clause)."
> It links to the 2-clause BSD [2].
> My understanding is that the 4-clause BSD ("original BSD") [3] is the
> one that is not permitted.
> But nothing is said about the newer 3-clause BSD ("simplified BSD") [4]
> I propose that the "simplified BSD" should be added to the category-a list.
