Kevan Miller commented on LEGAL-119:
------------------------------------

In my opinion, no. If you have determined that portions of the NOTICE file are not relevant
to the Voldemort artifacts you are including in Whirr, then you do not need to include those
portions of the NOTICE file.

Looking at the Voldemort NOTICE file, I don't see any notice information that applies directly
to the Voldemort project, itself. I'm not familiar with Voldemort or the Voldemort jar. There
are some things to look out for: non-voldemort source code that was used to build the voldemort
jar. Also, sometimes a jar files can contain class files that have been repackaged from other
projects (either directly or sometimes via some byte-code manipulation -- the shade plugin
can do this).

I took a look at the Voldemort jar file and NOTICE file. From a brief review, I'd agree with
you. The Voldemort NOTICE file does not pertain to the Whirr project, if only the jar file
is being embedded..

In the ASF projects that I work on, we usually produce jar files with LICENSE/NOTICE files
that are specific to the jar file. This makes it much simpler for projects embedding the jar
file.

> This issue has come up in the context of a Whirr release artifact which includes third
party software that is itself under AL2.0, Voldemort in this case.
> Voldemort has an extensive NOTICE file.
> However Whirr is only including the Voldemort jar file which does not contain any of
the dependencies listed in the NOTICE to which I provided the above link.
> Given the AL2.0 in section 4.4 says, in part, "excluding those notices that do not pertain
to any part of the Derivative Works" is Whirr required to include any notice from the voldemort
NOTICE?
