Stefan Bodewig commented on INFRA-12291:
----------------------------------------

I'm trying to find my way around the puppet repo.

For the Gump VM I'll need some stuff that's relatively easy to make available via puppet

- a user
- a crontab
- a checked out svn working copy of a public repo
- likely some additional packages
- a vhost
- a running mysqld
- a running mta that is allowed to relay email
- some configuration files easily created from templates

is the best approach to place all of them into (a) puppet module(s) and use that(them) from
my node? I see this is what whimsy does, for example.

Then I've got a few things that may be more difficult to do unless I want to do it manually

- a checked out svn copy of a private repo (and I don't want to put credentials inside the
puppet tree)
- install a backup of the existing mysql db from vmgump
- install a bunch of software that doesn't stem from a package, some of them are simply exploded
tarballs of ASF distributed software
- at least in one configuration file I'll have to store credentials (a DB password)

I assume I'll have to perform the first two things manually and could perform some exec magic
for the third part, but maybe there already exists a module for "download tarball and extract
it". Any recommendation how to handle the credentials part? Are they stored in hiera and if
so how do I get them in there?

> vmgump needs to be migrated off of Eirene as the host being decommissioned.
> A new VM will be created, access granted and assist Gump project in migrating over.
> Or, if Gump no longer need their VM, just turn off the old instance.
