Subject [jira] [Commented] (INFRA-10530) Ubuntu 14.04 vm for whimsy (to replace 12.04 whimsy-vm)
Date Wed, 30 Dec 2015 00:33:49 GMT

Sam Ruby commented on INFRA-10530:

> gitwcsub is blocked on:
> - a git repo to pull from
> - support in gitwcsub for pulling from places that are not git-wip-us (as well as updating
gitpubsub to get events from places that aren't based upon git-wip-us).

The plan is to have bidirectional synchronization, which I presume would mean git-wip-us.
But I would be entirely OK with a GitHub webhook being defined is directed to whimsy-vm2
running code that I control. In fact, that might be easier as I could add code that conditionally
restarts servers, etc. But that would need to wait until httpd is set up.

> As for the webserver there are a few things:
 >- The vhosts *must* be updated to httpd 2.4 format

Apache httpd 2.4 is fine with me. I'm willing to start over with the vhost definition.

> There is also the question of whether you want to manage the vhosts yourself, or have
puppet manage them.

I'm currently managing the vhost definition. If there is an advantage to having puppet manage

More generally, what's the decision criteria for deciding what should be puppet managed and
what should be manually installed? As a rough approximation, I would think that it would
be best for puppet to manage anything that is installed as as a .deb (for example, httpd).
 Agree? Disagree?

> Current VM for Whimsy is running 12.04; which should be retired over time. Please set
up a new VM for whimsy accessible via the web under a new name during the transition. Once
set up and verified, the existing VM can be taken down
