Subject [jira] [Commented] (INFRA-7655) Explore where there is a benefit to having SSL proxies cache content as well
Date Fri, 16 May 2014 11:24:13 GMT

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-7655?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13998658#comment-13998658

jan iversen commented on INFRA-7655:

<b>Currently we have 3 different setups:</b>
Listed below with advantages/disadvantages.

<b>browser -> HTTP://foo.a.o -> VM(appl)</b>
+ Simple setup
- No caching for medium/high volume traffic sites
  (in many cases, causing an extra load on the sql server)

<b>browser -> HTTPS://foo.a.o -> proxy --> HTTP://foo.a.o -> VM(appl)</b>
<b>browser -> HTTP://foo.a.o  -> proxy, permanent redirect to HTTPS://foo.a.o</b>
<b>one proxy pr vmware box</b)
+ certificate only resides on root@ controlled vm
- no cache
- no monitor site down versus proxy down
- http to vm not secure (vms tends to move off the box)

<b>browser -> HTTPS://foo.a.o -> proxy -> HTTP://foo.a.o -> VM(ATS) ->

HTTP:// -> VM(appl)</b>
+ caching (saves about 2 of 5 sql quieries)
- network still loaded with extra traffic (proxy -> vm)
- ATS does not perform well on a vm

Next I will prepare a suggestion

> We have a number of SSL proxies that front end a number of our web properties. Is it
worth having the SSL proxies also cache content? This might mitigate short term outages, or
allow faster response from overloaded services.
