Subject [jira] Created: (INFRA-2171) permit committers to send mail with SMTP auth
Date Fri, 31 Jul 2009 19:36:14 GMT
permit committers to send mail with SMTP auth
---------------------------------------------

                 Key: INFRA-2171
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-2171
             Project: Infrastructure
          Issue Type: New Feature
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
          Components: Mail (qmail)
            Reporter: Doug Cutting

Google announced a new GMail feature today that lets folks send through an external SMTP server:

http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/send-mail-from-another-address-without.html

Previously, GMail only let folks set the From field in outgoing messages: Sender was always
set to their @gmail.com address. But Apache's mailing list tools only looks at the Sender.
Some folks would like to both use GMail, and to subscribe and moderate using their @apache.org
addresses, which is today not possible. But if Apache's mail server starting permitting folks
to send using SMTP auth then this would become possible.
