We do lack

  1. precommit checks on branch-2
  2. more combinations of branch-2 & JDK versions
  3. no builds/tests against java 9 previews
  4. people reacting to broken builds

issues 1-3 can be addressed by someone putting in the hours to set things up, though first
they'll need to sort out the build process so that parallel builds/tests don't screw up each
other's .m2 repositories & -SNAPSHOT jars. Having spent ~a week getting the migrate to
Java 7 & java 8 builds working-ish, I can warn that it takes a long time to get these
working (time for test runs & need for isolation adds complexity, running builds @ weekends
and outside US working hours helped).

If you want to volunteer to do all the work, then access to the ASF JIRA servers is something
that could perhaps be arranged.

Issue 4, though, that's the hard one. There are too many "build failed" messages from jenkins
to get people to react to more build profiles. We need effort on that first (isolation, test
stability) before anything else
