Subject ApacheCon NA - US Export Law - Open Conferences OK
Date Mon, 18 Feb 2013 05:24:51 GMT
ApacheCon NA is free to discuss most technology material.

Presenters that have proprietary knowledge should undertake
a brief review of the "fundamental research" definition so
so as to remove an export burden. Presentations at open
conferences is one way to "publish" the technology and
"fundamental research" and make it publicly available.

US Export Regulations
eCFR 734 - Supplement #1

The questions in supplement #1 to the export regulations
illustrates the export protections afforded open conferences
such as ApacheCon NA. The technology presented in the open
conferences is not governed by the EAR for "deemed export" of
technology. Furthermore, the open discussions fall under the
"fundamental research" definition.

I have been looking into these laws regarding cryptography
and secure systems design technologies. I am doing
fundamental research on how to design trusted applications
that can remain viable on compromised (untrusted) hosts.

Sincerely,
Steven J. Hathaway
