FreeBSD host 4.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE #0
My <VirtualHost> configuration

ServerName      pecka.dyndns.org
DocumentRoot    /usr/local/www/data
RewriteEngine   On
RewriteMap      lowercase       int:tolower
RewriteLog      /tmp/rewrite.log
RewriteLogLevel 9
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !\.php$|\.html|\.jpg|\.gif$
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ ${lowercase:$1}

Error Log output: - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]
(2) init rewrite engine with requested uri /TEST - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]
(3) applying pattern '^(.+)$' to uri '/TEST' - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]

(4) RewriteCond: input='/TEST' pattern='[A-Z]' => matched - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]
(5) map lookup OK: map=lowercase key=$1 -> val=$1 - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]
(2) rewrite /TEST -> $1 - - [28/Jan/2001:12:24:26 +0000] [pecka.dyndns.org/sid#80b100c][rid#8203034/initial]
(2) local path result: $1

I have the same configuration under Linux (downloaded, untared, make, make install + php4)
and it works there. It doesn't expand the $1 in ${lowercase:$1} but if I try only $1 to see
if it has a value, it shows the value that is in ^(.+)$ just like it should.
