 An additional point: mod_ssl depends on EAPI for its mechanism, which
 involves changes to the core of Apache. In the absence of EAPI you can
 use an environment variable to store state across reinitializations.
 
 In 2.0 there is a per-process pool that exists across
 reinitializations to which you can attach arbitrary user data (better
 than just the strings that EAPI and environment variables give you).
