 Apache can handle symbolic links, but there is a default section in the
 distributed access.conf-dist file:
 
 <Directory />
 Options None
 AllowOverride None
 </Directory>
 
 Which disables symlinks.  You have to re-enable them.  Try changing
 "Options None" to "Options FollowSymLinks".
