The lack of response is probably due to there being no one
else on the Apache team who has a SMP Redhat system to try
and divine the cause of the problems.  Do you have any
debugging information which could point to a particular 
set of system calls made by Apache?  There are SMP OS's which
Apache is perfectly happy on, like Sequent, so I'm not
convinced it's a problem with Apache.  Have you contacted
RedHat support?
