Yeah, that's the simplest way. If you run into performance problems
later, you can use the StringResourceLoader to allow you to put
strings into a repository and load templates from there to allow your
app to cache templates and not re-parse them every time.

&gt;&gt; Hi all! I'm having troubles to merge a template and its parameters by using
&gt;&gt; VTL.
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; I did the next example that I found in the apache site:
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; Velocity.init();
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; VelocityContext context = new VelocityContext();
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; context.put( "name", new String("Velocity") );
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; Template template = Velocity.getTemplate("mytemplate.vm");
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; template.merge( context, sw );
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; This example, worked ok.
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; But the problem is that I already have the template contents given by
&gt;&gt; parameter (I don't need to load the resource from the file system).
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; What can I do? It's necesary to save the contents into a file, and then
&gt;&gt; load it doing this?
&gt;&gt; Velocity.getTemplate("templatePath");
&gt;&gt;
&gt;&gt; I wouldn't like to do it.

There is a DataSourceResourceLoader. Also, there is a
StringResourceLoader, if you turn your template into a String and add
it to a StringResourceRepository.

Finally, if you don't need any caching, you could skip the resource
loader stuff and just use the Velocity.evaluate(...) method to
directly parse and render your template.

Ok, i tried this, and it turns out that /^screen_content/ matches the
$screen_content reference specifically. In Perl regex (which is used
here via the Jakarta Oro lib), ^ denotes the start of a line unless it
is used in a class definition like [^a-z], in which case it negates
the class.

http://www.rexswain.com/perl5.html#regular

I'm actually not sure how to write an expression that matches
everything but $screen_content, expect perhaps /^[^_]+$/ (which would
match anything that didn't have a _ in it. Not ideal, but i'm drawing
a blank on other ways to achieve this. If there's no way to define an
entirely negated regex, then we should perhaps consider adding a
property like:

eventhandler.escape.html.match.except

or something like that.

P.S. I just noticed that this conversation is on the general@ list.
This would be better on the user@ list (where there are more people
watching).

&gt;&gt; Hmm. That's odd that nothing gets escaped in the screen
&gt;&gt; when you set
&gt;&gt; "eventhandler.escape.html.match to
&gt;&gt; /^screen_content/".  I'll have to
&gt;&gt; try this out myself, as i'm fairly sure that should

If you scroll down on the download page, you'll notice that it tells
you that all older releases are here:

Also, 1.5 depended on commons-collections 3.x as well. You can
always use the velocity-1.5-dep.jar or velocity-1.6-dep.jar if you
don't want to include the full commons-collections jars.

You might find more help on the user@velocity.apache.org list. This
list doesn't have a lot of subscribers, i think.

Anyway, if you are working with Velocity in a servlet environment, you
should really be using VelocityTools as well.
http://velocity.apache.org/tools/devel/

VelocityTools provides the VelocityViewServlet and other support
classes like the WebappResourceLoader (formerly known as the
WebappLoader), which is probably what you need most right now.
Loading templates reliably in a servlet environment using the default
FileResourceLoader. For info on how to do that, check the website,
the examples that come with the VelocityTools distribution, and of
course, search the mailing list archives
(http://velocity.markmail.org)

Nathan,

I will try velocity, if it is not tied to HTML i may work. But i'm not sure if msword special
characters could confuse the parser... i'll test.

If velocity is not tied to HTML, it should work, may be at least with the simpler RTF.

POI is an alternative i've been evaluating, i was looking for something simple: "replace tokens
with
runtime information" ...i posted to know if there is some specific experience using velocity
for this.

Thank you
Hans

Jexl was originally Velocity based/inspired. AFAIK, the syntaxes are
still quite similar. If you'd like a general description, Velocity's

examples.

Nothing official, but we do run template tests with JUnit in the
Velocity Engine tests. You could download that source distribution
and use those as an example or starting point.

You could use VelocityTools (http://velocity.apache.org/tools/devel/),
which provides a ResourceTool to simplify resource access in templates
(http://velocity.apache.org/tools/devel/javadoc/org/apache/velocity/tools/generic/ResourceTool.html)

Or you could just put the resource bundle in the context and call its
methods directly from there.

<title>[ANNOUNCE] VelocityTools 2.0 Beta 1 Released</title>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<pre>
The Velocity developers are pleased to make the first beta release of
VelocityTools 2.0 available for download and testing.

Downloads of VelocityTools 2.0-beta1 are available here:
http://velocity.apache.org/download.cgi#tools

This release marks the completion of major development in
VelocityTools 2.0, which is now the main development trunk.
Significant new features in 2.0 include very flexible, composable
toolbox configuration (via either java, xml, and/or properties),
lazy-loading/initialization of tools, the VelocityViewTag for
embedding Velocity within JSP, an assortment of new and improved
tools, and much more.

This should be useable as a drop in replacement for Tools 1.4, with a
few minor exceptions here things already deprecated earlier in 1.x
have been removed. This also is the first Tools release to require
both Velocity 1.5+ and JDK 1.5+.

At this point, the new tool management and configuration facilities
are extremely stable and useable. Documentation has been radically
improved since the alpha release, though more work
remains there before 2.0 final is released. There are no open or
known bugs in this release and encourage further testing (especially
of the library's backwards compatibility) as we progress rapidly
toward the 2.0 release. We are also more than happy to answer
questions on the mailing lists.

More information on the major changes between Tools 1.x and 2.x may be
found here:
http://wiki.apache.org/velocity/VelocityTools2Planning

We are very interested in all feedback regarding Tools 2.0, especially
regarding backwards compatibility with apps designed for Tools 1.4 or
earlier. We aim to enable a smooth, incremental transition for
developers and their applications.

 Hi Claude,

Thanks for your suggestion. However, my harddrive died and I am unable to
change the logo until I find my old photoshop CD, which might take some time
XD.

I'm going to email the dev for voting on which logo looks the best. If more
people like the design that you like, I'll recreate it.

Regards,

Edward

yeah, it does.  that helps.

nah, i prefer color.

&gt;
&gt; And one with gradient:
&gt; http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd53/shadowpwner/ApacheVelocityTools3Gradient.png

i actually like these both pretty well. i'd be hard pressed to pick.
 thanks for trimming some of that whitespace. :) how's this, i'm not
sure what Chris Townsen's feedback was, but i think you should either:

a) pick one of the two color ones above and call that your submission

b) or if you are having a hard time deciding, ask for people on the
dev@velocity.apache.org list to vote between them.

whichever way, i think we're probably about ready to wrap this up.

&gt; I'll make an example on how it'll fit the website as soon as I'm done with
&gt; my design, if its okay. :)

that'd be great. it'll be smaller than it currently is too, right?

&gt; &gt; The colors mesh perfectly now. :) I also like the different font
&gt; &gt; weights for Velocity and Tools.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; &gt; I tried to make the T look more like a T, but now to me it looks like a
&gt; &gt; &gt; tongue :P (See the resemblance?)
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; Yeah, though my first thought was that it looked like a shield, which
&gt; &gt; is a bit more noble than a tongue. :) I wonder if straightening out
&gt; &gt; the wings of the V would help...
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; &gt; Also, here it is with the current template:
&gt; &gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd53/shadowpwner/VeltoolsNewLogoPS2.png
&gt; &gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; &gt; The logo will probably be 50% of the current size, I enlarged it so you
&gt; &gt; &gt; could see the details.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; Cool, though i'd be curious to see how well the details compress also.
&gt; &gt; And there still seems like more whitespace than necessary on the

&gt;
&gt; The colors mesh perfectly now. :) I also like the different font
&gt; weights for Velocity and Tools.
&gt;
&gt; &gt; I tried to make the T look more like a T, but now to me it looks like a
&gt; &gt; tongue :P (See the resemblance?)
&gt;
&gt; Yeah, though my first thought was that it looked like a shield, which
&gt; is a bit more noble than a tongue. :) I wonder if straightening out
&gt; the wings of the V would help...
&gt;
&gt; &gt; Also, here it is with the current template:
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;
&gt; http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd53/shadowpwner/VeltoolsNewLogoPS2.png
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; The logo will probably be 50% of the current size, I enlarged it so you
&gt; &gt; could see the details.
&gt;
&gt; Cool, though i'd be curious to see how well the details compress also.
&gt; And there still seems like more whitespace than necessary on the
&gt; right side and the top.

&gt; &gt; &gt; That's a pretty good start, though i confess that it took me a second

&gt; &gt; &gt; particularly hard to recognize. Still, the symbol looks a lot
&gt; &gt; &gt; snazzier than the current meager wrench (no offense, if you're still
&gt; &gt; &gt; out there Tim Colson :). I do think the color scheme could use some
&gt; &gt; &gt; adjustment to fit better, as it clashes a bit right now. I attached a
&gt; &gt; &gt; screenshot of this draft logo in the velocitytools docs to show that.
&gt; &gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; &gt; I think that's it for stylistic feedback. I'm not really the best at
&gt; &gt; &gt; that. Functionally, the logo will need to be smaller and could
&gt; &gt; &gt; probably stand to have some of the surrounding whitespace reduced to
&gt; &gt; &gt; make better use of its space.
