So, as it turns out, traffic_cop was not finding libtsmgmt.so and  libtsutil.so even though
/usr/local/lib was listed in /etc/ld.so.conf and both shared libs existed.

I had to explicitly set  /usr/local/lib in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.   Then all worked great.

After restart, it works as expected.  Guess it just needed to be shaken loose.

I had this problem on 10.04 it actually turned out that the log folder didn't have the correct
permissions

Do a strace on it and see if it is trying to write to a folder but getting denied.

Hmmm, works for me on my Ubuntu 11.04 ... Can you either run "sh -x" on the trafficserver
script? Or see if there's something in /var/log/messages or something ? Or what if you try
"sudo traffic_cop" directly (or "sudo "traffic_shell", (or "sudo traffic_server")).
