Looks like nobody posted this yet.

Migrating from x.y.z to x.y.(z+∂) is quite easy, especially if you
have a split CATALINA_HOME/CATALINA_BASE as Daniel suggested. It makes
rollbacks pretty trivial as well.

I've done this both on Windows and Linux and it's roughly the same.
For Windows Services, you have to do a bit more work, but once you do
it, you'll be glad you did (regardless of the operating environment).
