Hard to say.  I suppose you could setup Wireshark and monitor the traffic between your Tomcat
instance and your database to see what happens. That might give you some idea as to what'
going on.

Again, hard to say because you're asking about the behavior of the database.  You'd be better
off asking the mailing list for the DB (if it's OSS) or support (if it's proprietary).
