Subject RE: Tomcat 5.5.28 on 64 bit windows server 2008.
Date Sun, 21 Aug 2011 09:55:20 GMT

As suggested I have installed the latest version(5.5.33) of Tomcat 5.5.x. After installing
I have typed in the browser 'http://localhost' to check if the tomcat is installed properly.
The home page is displayed indicating that the installation is fine. Then I typed in ip address
of the machine '' and page not found page is displayed. This is exactly the
same problem why we have downgraded the version. There are no changes or customizations made
 to the installation. It was default installation and the only change is to use port 80 instead
of 8080.

The below is the server.xml file.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<Server port="8005" shutdown="SHUTDOWN">
  <Listener className="org.apache.catalina.core.AprLifecycleListener" />
  <Listener className="org.apache.catalina.mbeans.ServerLifecycleListener" />
  <Listener className="org.apache.catalina.mbeans.GlobalResourcesLifecycleListener" />
  <Listener className="org.apache.catalina.storeconfig.StoreConfigLifecycleListener"/>

    <Environment name="simpleValue" type="java.lang.Integer" value="30"/>

    <Resource name="UserDatabase" auth="Container"
       description="User database that can be updated and saved"
          pathname="conf/tomcat-users.xml" />

  <Service name="Catalina">

    <Connector port="80" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192"
               maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="25" maxSpareThreads="75"
               enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="100"
               connectionTimeout="20000" disableUploadTimeout="true" />

    <Connector port="8009"
               enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" protocol="AJP/1.3" />

    <Engine name="Catalina" defaultHost="localhost">

      <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm"

      <Host name="localhost" appBase="webapps"
       unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true"
       xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false">

as localhost, it is working fine. But if we try accessing using IP address, then the Tomcat
home page is not displayed. The result is same for all the versions later than 5.5.28. Not
sure what is causing this or what needs to be done to fix this. So we started using 5.5.28.
That sounds like a network misconfiguration issue or a misconfiguration within Tomcat's server.xml,
not a Tomcat problem per se.

1) download the latest version of Tomcat 5.5 and install it, even if it appears not to work
2) Note the exact problem carefully (including logfile message if any)
3) Remove all comments and sensitive information from the server.xml file, and copy and paste
it in your next message.
Repeat : copy and paste, do not send it as an attachment; the list strips most attachmnts.

The point : better to use a known "best version" of Tomcat, and fix what appears to be a simple
misconfiguration, rather than spending a lot of time looking for missing DLLs or the like.
