So, such patterns do work, but that specific one does not.

I guess it will be something trivial, like mapping two different
servlets to the same URL pattern.

If you want to debug it, look at
http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/FAQ/Developing#Debugging
and place breakpoints in the
org.apache.tomcat.util.http.mapper.Mapper
class.
