I finally found some others with the same issue (and the same stackoverflow=
)

The workaround to "unpackWAR=3Dfalse" mentioned by the last commenter does =
resolve it at least temporarily for me at least.

Looking at the stack trace posted there, I have a little bit of difference =
at the top but from the stackoverflow error on it's the same, including the=
 ExpandWar.delete calls (although it is a different source slightly - diffe=
rent line numbers)

At any rate this topic is sort of closed for me. It's not just my setup wha=
tever the problem is and I have it working, if less than ideally now.

I definitely misspoke: I was thinking gcj, not OpenJDK.
