Mmm.  I'm not sure that sounds like a good idea.

tar -zxvf tomcat-version.tar.gz

I've never needed set JAVA_HOME on OSX.  I don't know why people keep
saying you do.

If the above doesn't work, then can you create a new user account in
case you've got something local to your user environment?
