FWIW- I've moved away from Apache as a proxy entirely. I use HAProxy with ACLs. It's more
efficient and flexible, IMHO, and the only thing I really need Apache for is serving PHP pages.

That said, it seems to me it would simpler to proxy "/a" and have a servlet look at PATH_INFO,
then forward to whatever path or context you want.
