What do you mean by "subdomains assigned to directories"?  Can you provide the Tomcat configuration
you're using that implements whatever it is you're describing?

In general, the container (Tomcat) is under no obligation to provide *any* access to the file
system, other than the temp space required by the servlet spec.  Where (and even if) a .war
is expanded is not mandated by the spec, so there's no guarantee that any directories exist
(or, for that matter, that there's a file system at all).
