That's probably the difference; it doesn't sound very mysterious to me.

It sounds simple to me:

JkMount /*
JkUnMount /*.gif
JkUnMount /*.jpg
JkUnMount /*.css
...

versus

JkMount /*.jsp

??

The second config simply never maps *.gif, *.jpg, etc.

I don't believe there have been significant changes to the way mod_jk
works over the years.
