Agreed, I run 2 LBed tomcats in seperate vmware machines for our dev environ. with no noticeable
problems. Depends on the app though. For instance, my mysql cluster in vmware sucks when you
do just about anything in the vm machines, because it's so sensitive to latency.

I agree with Jorge - I run several Tomcats under VMware for both 
production and development.

However it is worth noting that if you use the appropriate vmware tools 
for your installation (vmware-guestd etc.) you get a significant 
performance boost on network accesses which may well be important for 
tomcat. (See vmxnet) YMMV.
