Youch. That's the first time I ever seen the OOM killer in the wild.
Good to know that it actually happens, and what it does at the time
(i.e. check syslog!).

You might try the trick found in the malloc man page to use more
reasonable memory allocation semantics (in which case you'd probably get
an OOME in Java including a possible stack trace and at least then it
would be a bit more obvious what's going on).
