It also might be a connection pool exhaustion. Perhaps something in your
demo environment is different, like the amount of time lag between uses
of the database. If your connections are becoming stale and you're not
prepared to recycle them, you might end up with a pool full of stale
connections, and wait forever for a fresh one.

You could also be depleting your connection pool, in which case you've
got an empty pool instead of a useless one. With no other information,
I'd suspect a connection leak. But since it's working in production, I'm
at a loss...
