Usually it works well with mod_jk, because mod_jk carries forward the information, if the original protocol was http or https. So request.getScheme() should return the right protocol prefix. The solution of your problem will depend on the knowledge of which component actually produces the absolute links. The story is different, if you connect an ssl offfloading reverse proxy via HTTP (in contrast to AJP/13). Then you need to configure the proxy attributes of the incoming tomcat http connector.
