It's not a Tomcat configuration matter.  In your application, 
try {
  ...
} catch (Exception e) {
  logger.error("Oops", e);
}

In fact, one of the *major* benefits of having switched to log4j is that
you don't mix logging and Tomcat configurations.  You're portable.
